    Intra-articular gout calcifications

Intra-articular gout calcifications or other inflammatory rheumatoid like conditions: The wrist is one of the more common joints that become affected in patients with gout, rheumatoid arthritis or any of the other poly-inflammatory joint diseases. The patient must be screened for the existence of these, especially if a patient has other swollen joints at the same time, as well as family members that also have problems with inflammation of their joints. Some of these inflammatory joint diseases have a strong family presence (hereditary).

The synovitis and swelling must always be reduced and controlled by medication as first line of defence.

Patients that have problems with gout may have gout calcifications in the wrist joint that could require arthroscopic removal.

In terms of the other inflammatory conditions, open surgery will only be indicated once the wrist start to develop a deformity and constant pain, irrespective of the medication.
