What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a thick soft tissue structure at the level of the wrist. The muscles of the fore-arm change into tendons and run through the tunnel. This tunnel is like a pulley that keeps al the tendons together. Amongst the tendons is a nerve, the median nerve.
For several reasons this tunnel can become more narrow. Nerves are much softer in consistency than tendons and it cannot handle the pressure inside the tunnel. The nerve than has difficulty in transmitting signals to the hand.

The patient will develop needles and pins on the palmar aspect of the index finger of the hand. This happens more readily at night time. Eventually it will feel as if the fingers become numb.
