What is osteo-arthrosis of the shoulder?
It is extensive wear and tear of the soft smooth cartilage of the shoulder joint. The cartilage cracks and flakes and loses its smooth surface. This is very irritating and causes a lot of pain. The joint responds to the pain and irritation by forming bony ridges (osteophytes) that prevent normal movement of the shoulder. The shoulder becomes more and more stiff and painful to move.
How do we treat OA of the shoulder?
The short answer is that we can perform a shoulder replacement. There are many technical decisions that needs to be discussed between the patient and the orthopaedic surgeon to decide which type of replacement will work best. The patient will be pain free afterwards, but it is unlikely that the patient will regain all the movement of the shoulder.
Unlike hip and knee replacements, shoulder replacements do not last as long.
